  • Research Scientist – EO Remote Sensing

    Work in small teams with SSI Scientists and Engineers on a variety of projects in sensor and environment modeling and data analysis algorithm development. Typical projects include development of physical models of complex interactions of light and matter, and sensor response, development of advance algorithms for enhancement and exploitation of signals in clutter. Extraction of information from large geospatial/spectral datasets. Development of processing architectures and prototyping software for use within our in-house sensors and imagers. The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs, solicit funding, write proposals, and carry through phases of development from concept to prototype.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • An MS or PhD degree in the physical sciences (physics, atmospheric sciences, image science, optics, etc.) or engineering (electrical, aerospace, mechanical, etc.).
    • Experience should include the development of fundamental physical models, data analysis algorithms, and/or sensor concepts involving remote sensing for aerospace, industrial, or medical applications.
    • Experience programming with C/C++, Python and/or Fortran, shell scripting, Unix command line tools.
    • US citizenship and ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance are required.

    Additional Factors Considered:

    • Post-degree work experience.
    • Post-Doctoral work is desirable and counts towards work experience.
    • Proficiency in current methods of mathematical modeling of physical phenomena.

    Research Engineer: Computational Aerospace Applications

    The successful candidate will work within a small team of SSI scientists and engineers on a variety of projects in physical modeling and simulation, data analysis, and algorithm development. Typical projects include leveraging high-performance computing capabilities to simulate real events and comparison with available measured data or development and integration of key physical models within parallel software. The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to conduct original research, developing ideas that meet customer needs, assisting in solicitation of funding, and carrying through phases of research and development from concept through prototype.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • A B.S. or M.S. degree in engineering (aerospace, electrical, chemical) or the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences).
    • Demonstrated ability in computational fluid dynamics, development and application of continuum and rarefied simulation models, and/or integration of chemistry and physical models within large-scale simulation.
    • Experience should include a deep understanding of fundamental physical models, data analysis algorithms, and/or sensor concepts involving remote sensing for aerospace, industrial, or medical applications.
    • Experience in Python, shell scripting, MATLAB, and/or Unix command line tools.
    • US citizenship and ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance are required.

    Additional Factors Considered:

    • A Ph.D. or relevant work experience are highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of one or more compiled computer languages, such as Fortran, C, or C++, and experience in the development and execution of software on a variety of serial and parallel platforms, in particular on Linux and Windows platforms.

    Research Scientist – Scientific Computation

    Work with SSI scientists and engineers on a variety of projects in physical modeling, data analysis, and algorithm development. Typical projects develop physical models of chemical reactions, multi-phase flows, and molecular spectra, including aspects of numerical algorithms, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, fluid dynamics, spectroscopy, radiation transport, and physics. End products are realistic prediction of events and phenomenology, including spatial, spectral and temporal signatures. The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs, solicit funding, write proposals, and carry through phases of scientific software development from initial physical equations of phenomenology to demonstration pseudo-code to fully documented and tested large scale scientific software.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • An MS or PhD degree in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry) or engineering (aerospace, chemical, etc.).
    • Experience should include the development of fundamental physical models, numerical methods, and data analysis algorithms.
    • Proficiency in current methods of mathematical modeling of physical phenomena.
    • Experience with multi-processing and multi-threading programming, shell scripting, Unix command line tools.
    • A track record of written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills.
    • US citizenship and ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance are required.
