Remote Sensing Signal and Image Processing Engineer

The successful candidate will work independently or with a team of scientists and engineers on remote sensing projects to improve sensitivity of spectroscopic and image sensing algorithms in the presence of noise, distortion, aberration, turbulence and other factors. Develop sensor and phenomenological models that embody physically accurate signals and backgrounds. The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs, assisting in solicitation of funding, and carrying through phases of development from concept to prototype.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Aerospace or Electrical/Computer Systems Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent.
  • 2 years post-degree work experience (6 years for MS candidate).
  • Specific experience in one or more areas of electromagnetic signal processing, including DSP, image processing and deconvolution, tomographic reconstruction, detection theory, neural networks and nonlinear data processing, processing of high dimensional data sets and data mining.
  • Experience with scientific software prototyping in higher level 4GL programming languages such as IDL, MATLAB, and/or Labview. 
  • Familiarity with data analysis and reduction techniques, numerical algorithms and control systems. 
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US and have all credentials necessary to obtain a US Government Security Clearance.

ADDITIONAL FACTORS CONSIDERED:

  • post-Doctoral work is desirable and counts towards work experience. 
  • Proficiency in current methods of mathematical modeling of physical phenomena.
  • General understanding of molecular chemistry, spectroscopy, radiation transfer phenomena, and/or fluid dynamics. 
  • Knowledge of one or more object-oriented languages, such as Fortran 90/95 or C++, and experience in creating and running code in these languages on a variety of platforms, in particular on Linux and Windows platforms. 
  • Experience in Python, shell scripting, Unix command line tools, and creating and running code on parallel systems, such as a Beowulf cluster or multithreading. 
  • Experience transitioning software to microprocessors, FPGAs and/or GPUs.
  • Hands-on experience with microcontrollers, gas flow, machining, wiring, FPGAs, circuit design and layout. 
  • Demonstrated accomplishment in team building, systems engineering, customer relations, technical marketing, and proposal writing.  
  • Outstanding written, oral and interpersonal communications skills.

Research Scientist

The successful candidate is highly motivated with a strong background in the physical sciences. S/he will work independently and with SSI Scientists on a variety of projects in modeling and data analysis algorithm development for EO remote sensing applications. Typical problems deal with space and atmospheric phenomena, combustion, and propulsion effects.  The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs, assisting in solicitation of funding, writing proposals, and carrying through phases of development from concept to prototype. 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A PhD degree in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, optics, etc) or engineering (electrical, aeronautical, chemical).
  • 2 years work experience.
  • Experience should include the development of fundamental physical models, data analysis algorithms, and/or sensor concepts involving remote sensing for aerospace, industrial or medical applications. 
  • Experience with scientific software prototyping in higher level 4GL programming languages such as IDL, MATLAB, and/or Labview.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US and have all credentials necessary to obtain a US Government Security Clearance.

The successful candidate will work with SSI Scientists on a variety of projects in modeling, data analysis and algorithm development.  The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs, assisting in solicitation of funding, writing proposals, and carrying through phases of development from concept to prototype.  Typical projects include leveraging high performance computing capabilities to simulate real events and comparison with available measured data or development and integration of key physical models within parallel software.
