- Research Scientist/Engineer Job Description: SSI seeks an early to mid-career scientist or engineer with background and skills that are synergistic with one or more of our current focus areas and who offers new perspective, skills, concepts and/or technologies. The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs. They are highly motivated to invent novel approaches, write proposals and perform all phases of development. SSI is a contract research firm that conducts multidisciplinary research and development in the physical sciences and engineering. Example projects include:
- A PhD in engineering (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, chemical), in one of the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, optics) or in a related field; or a M.S. degree in an engineering or physical science discipline plus five years of relevant post-degree work experience; or substantial experience in research and development for government, academia, or industry relevant to SSI focus areas.
- Experience with the development of physical/mathematical/numerical models, data-driven modeling, data analysis pipelines, and/or remote sensing concepts.
- Extensive experience with scientific programming (C/C++, Fortran, etc.) and scripting languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
- A track record of written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills.
- US citizenship and the ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance.
- Post-graduate or equivalent work experience.
- Military or government research experience.
- Proficiency in current methods of mathematical and numerical modeling of physical phenomena.
- Familiarity with chemistry, hyper/multi-spectral imaging, molecular spectroscopy and radiative transfer phenomena.
- Experience with high performance computing (HPC), parallel programming, and integration of chemical and physical models within large-scale computational simulations.
- Experience with spectral image processing methods, including processing to reflectance, AI/ML methods, and/or detection and identification algorithms.
- Experience with modern software engineering processes and version control, preferably Git.
- Experience in design and implementation of electro-optical instrumentation and/or software.
- Demonstrated accomplishment in team building, customer relations, technical marketing, and proposal writing.
- A. Developing physical models and analysis tools for high speed multi-phase reacting flows. B. Development of models of interactions of light, matter and sensor response, and/or development of advanced algorithms for enhancement and exploitation of signals in cluttered environments.
