    Researcher, Scientific Computation

    Spectral Sciences, Inc. seeks a talented and highly motivated multi-disciplinary  researcher for work in the areas of physical modeling, data analysis, and algorithm development.

    Job Description: 

    The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently and in small groups, to develop ideas that meet customer needs. They are highly motivated to develop new ideas, write proposals and carry through all phases of scientific software development from the initial physical equations of phenomenology; to the development of demonstration pseudo-code; to the completion of fully documented and tested large scale scientific software. Typical projects may involve developing physical models and analysis tools for chemical reactions, multi-phase flows, and molecular spectra, including, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, fluid dynamics, spectroscopy, radiation transport, and physics. End products often include realistic prediction of events and phenomenology, including estimates of spatial, spectral, and temporal signatures.

    Required Minimum Qualifications:

    • A PhD degree in engineering (aerospace, electrical, chemical, mechanical), applied mathematics (data science, computer science, applied statistics) or the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences) or equivalent or a M.S. degree in one of the above disciplines along with five years of relevant post-degree work experience.
    • Experience should include proficiency in current methods of mathematical modeling of physical phenomena and development of fundamental physical models, numerical methods, and data analysis algorithms.
    • Programming ability in Python and/or C++
    • A track record of written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills.
    • US citizenship and ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance are required.

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Post-Doctoral and/or post-degree work experience.
    • Familiarity with chemistry, molecular spectroscopy, and radiative transfer phenomena.
    • Computational modeling with fluid dynamics and/or continuum and rarefied simulation
    • Integration of chemical and physical models within large-scale simulation.
    • Familiarity with data science including analysis and reduction techniques, numerical algorithms, control systems, big data and deep learning concepts.
    • Experience programming in FORTRAN and/or MATLAB

    Researcher, Atmospheric Sciences and Remote Sensing

    Job Description: 

    The ideal candidate for this position is comfortable working independently, and in small groups to develop ideas that meet customer needs. They are highly motivated to develop new ideas, write proposals and carry through all phases of scientific software development from initial physical equations of phenomenology; to the development of demonstration pseudo-code; to fully documented and tested large scale scientific software. Typical projects may involve development of physical models of complex interactions of light and matter and sensor response, including radiative transfer models, development of advanced algorithms for enhancement and exploitation of signals in clutter extraction of information from large datasets and development of processing architectures and prototyping software. End products include realistic prediction of events and phenomenology, estimates of spatial, spectral, and temporal signatures, or detection, classification, and/or identification of signal features.

    Required Minimum Qualifications:

    • A PhD in engineering (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, chemical) or physical science (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, optics) or a related field, or a M.S. degree in an engineering or physical science discipline plus five years of relevant post-degree work experience.
    • Experience should include the development of fundamental physical models, data analysis algorithms, and/or sensor concepts involving geospatial remote sensing.
    • Experience with fundamentals of programming.

    Research Engineer, Computational Aerospace Applications

    Job Description: 

    The successful candidate will work with a small team of scientists and engineers to develop software and algorithms for scientific R&D applications. This may include extension and application of fluid dynamics methods including CFD and DSMC for the prediction of hypersonic aerothermodynamic, rocket plume and satellite aerodynamic environments, estimation of material changes and emission and transmission of electro-optic signals through these environments, development, integration and testing of CFD/DSMC software, model comparisons, interpretation of experimental data, and analysis of large data sets.

    Required Minimum Qualifications:

    • A PhD in engineering (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, chemical) or the physical science (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, materials science) or related field or a M.S. degree in an engineering or physical science discipline along with  five years of relevant post degree experience.
    • Programming ability in Python and/or C++.
    • Initiative, interest in skill development, and desire to work closely with team members.
    • US citizenship and ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance upon hire.

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Post-Doctoral or equivalent work experience.
    • Familiarity with modeling gas flow, high temperature chemistry, and emission and transmission of light.
    • Experience with supersonic and hypersonic computational fluid dynamic models with software such as US3D, FUN3D, DPLR, Kestrel, CFD++, or equivalent.
    • Experience with direct simulation Monte Carlo software such as SPARTA, Monaco or MGDS.
    • Experience developing block structured and unstructured grids with software such as LINK3D, Pointwise, or equivalent.
    • Experience using CAD programs such as SolidWorks or similar.
    • Experience programming with FORTRAN.
    • Experience with version control software, preferably GIT.
    • Experience with standard build systems, such as gcc/Make/CMake and/or Visual Studio.
    • Ability to clearly communicate and present technical ideas to your peers.
    • An appreciation for developing software in an engineering context to drive algorithm and system design for real world systems.
