- Remote Sensing Research Scientist/Engineer Job Description: Spectral Sciences, Inc. (SSI) seeks an early-to-mid-career remote sensing scientist or engineer with background and skills that are synergistic with one or more of our current focus areas and who offers new perspective, skills, concepts and/or technologies. We especially encourage interdisciplinary applicants with remote sensing experience in scientific data analysis, software development, numerical analysis, algorithm development, signal and image processing, and/or artificial intelligence. As a small company, SSI gives scientists and engineers the opportunity to take ownership of meaningful technical work, learn across disciplines, and contribute directly to important customer missions from concept through delivery. SSI is a contract research firm that conducts multidisciplinary research and development in the physical sciences and engineering. Current focus areas for this post include:
- Remote sensing algorithm development, specifically in the electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) domain
- AI/ML with applications to Earth observation imaging, processing, detection, and tracking
- Radiative transfer modeling and simulation
- A PhD in physical sciences (physics, chemistry, atmospheric sciences, remote sensing, optics), engineering (mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace) or in a related field; or an M.S. degree in physical sciences or engineering discipline plus three years of relevant post-degree work experience; or substantial experience in research and development for government, academia, or industry relevant to SSI focus areas.
- Experience with the development of physical/mathematical/numerical models, data-driven modeling, data analysis pipelines, and/or remote sensing concepts.
- Extensive experience with scientific programming (C/C++, Fortran, etc.) and/or scripting languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
- A track record of written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills.
- US citizenship and the ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance.
- Post-graduate or equivalent work experience.
- Government research and/or military experience.
- Experience with chemistry, hyper/multi-spectral image analysis, molecular spectroscopy or radiative transfer phenomena.
- Experience with high performance computing (HPC), parallel programming, and integration of chemical and physical models within large-scale computational simulations.
- Experience with AI/ML methodology with applications to computer vision, regression tasks, or scientific / physics-informed machine learning.
- Experience with modern software engineering processes and version control, preferably Git.
- Demonstrated accomplishment in team building, customer relations, technical marketing, and proposal writing.
